Let’s use technology to learn! Here’s a list of my favourite apps that will help you learn about and enjoy the nature around you.
Seek helps to identify animals, plants and mushrooms that you encounter on your walks. I use it a lot. Seek is easier to use, but the iNaturalist app is one step more professional; it allows you to upload pictures and have experts help identify the species, then the information is used by scientists. Both are produced by iNaturalist, and both are great.
When it comes to identifying birds, Merlin rules! It’s produced by the world-famous Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. You can identify by both sight and sound. Just hold out your phone while a bird is singing and Merlin will tell you what it is. I love this one.
Sky Guide is excellent for identifying constellations and planets. Just point your phone at the heavens and it tells you what you’re looking at. You can even point it down, and Sky Guide will show you the stars that haven’t risen yet or that have already set. The marvels of technology!
A great app for anyone who wants to identify animal tracks, which is so much fun.
This one is very good to identifying plants.
